Why Did My Site Disappear from Google?

So you finally take action. You do your research, purchase your domain, buy your hosting and get your site up. You are feeling great.

A couple days down the road you decide to do a search in Google for one of your long tail keywords. First page! What a great feeling.

Two days later you repeat the search to see if you have moved up any. Hmm…that’s interesting nothing to be found on page one. So you check page two. Nothing. Three and four the same thing. Your site disappeared from Google and immediately you wonder why and if it will ever return.

Don’t worry if your site disappears from Google, you are not alone. Your site has not dropped off of Google’s radar.

This search engine phenomenon is sometimes referred to as “everflux”.

Let me try to clear it up.

In order to discover websites on the web Google sends out “spiders”. These spiders crawl the web looking for content. Once the spiders crawl over the content they update King Google aka the main Google database.

King Google

King Google

There is a ton of data about each site stored in this main database such as links to the site, the type of sites linking to it, the last update, etc. All of this info plays an important role in what position your site will rank in Google’s eyes.

There is also another group of spiders. They have acquired a different taste and only like fresh content.

When they come across a page that hasn’t been updated in a while, they just move on.

“Let’s go, nothing to see here folks.”

However, when they find some fresh content, they eat it up! They don’t report it back to the King, but instead they report it to Prince Google.

When a search is done, The King and the Prince get together and compare notes. Their results are posted and contain new content from the Prince along with older content from the King.

In order to make sure some of the newer stuff is seen, the content the Prince knows about is scattered in towards the top of the results. This is the reason your new site might show up towards the top soon after you put it up.

The problem is, as soon as the spiders tell the Prince about newer content than yours, you become old content. The Prince needs room in his database so he moves you off his list and onto the waiting list for the King’s spiders.

This is why your site may appear towards the top for a short time and then disappear.

Although it looks like your website disappeared from Google, have no fear! The King promises to get around to your site soon and once he does you will be entered in the main database and begin to appear higher up in searches once again.

Lately I’ve been using some new software that allows me to quickly find keywords that I can rank for and then move up in the rankings very quickly.

So if you are tired of waiting around for the King, you may want to try targeting some easier keywords.

I’ve just used this software to find a “buyer” keyword and go from page 6 in Google to page 1 in less than a week.

It’s not a must that you use this same software. Just make sure to do some good keyword research with whatever method you choose. It will make your life a whole lot easier when trying to move up in the rankings.

If you’d like to know more about the software that I am using you can read my review of Secockpit here.

yeh my site listed number 2 in google for “” then boom all is gone, it really scared me, and still is its been a good few days now. But my homepage will never be edited so how do i convince the spiders that it is still good

    • Eric Transue

First off John, sorry I had to edit your site and keywords out. I have nothing against your site just would rather keep the more mature links off of this particular site. Hope you understand.

What I would do if I were you John is to continue working on “offsite” SEO. Create relevant backlinks to your site by commenting in forums, answering questions on Yahoo and writing articles that link back to your site in the resource box. I would also contact some other site owners in your niche and see if any would allow you to post a link back to your site. You’d be surprised how many say yes. Start your email with a compliment of their site then transition in to a polite request for them to link to you. Good luck!

    Thanks for the info.

I don’t know if it is the same problem I got. I am sharing my blog articles on facebook, twitter, digg and yahoo buzz at the same time. For 1-2 days I can still see my articles when I search it on Google.
The problem is that after a few days some of my articles (those with a lot of readers) suddenly disappear!
I am not sure if it is due to multiple sharing I have done. Do you think Google would interpret it as spamming?
    Thanks again.

    • Eric Transue

How long has it been since you submitted/published your articles? If it was recent, then I would definitely say it is the “Google Dance” and you should see them reappearing soon.

From my personal experience the “duplicate content” issue is something that is over hyped by many Internet Marketers. From what I have seen you are only penalized for duplicate content if the duplicate content is on the same site. For instance if you had an article published on two different pages of your own site only one of those pages would be likely to appear in search engine results.

If you would like to learn more about SEO and duplicate content I highly recommend the book SEO lies by Justin Brooke. You can get the digital download for $1 and it is highly worth it if you want to learn more about duplicate content and getting your content ranked in Google.

My website get disappeared in google.. I got worried a lot but thanks for your article.. i m a bit relaxed now.. So should I need to change the content of my website regularly (my website is a static website)?

    • Eric Transue

I have seen static sites rank just as well as frequently updated blogs in Google. The main thing is to keep building relevant backlinks to your site.

This can be done with article marketing, video marketing, forum posting and directory submissions among others. If you would like to know some of the services I use to help automate these, shoot me an email and I’ll help you out.

  • http://www.demon-chat.com james flynn

I have a question to throw at you all and here goes – i own a site and it went down for a month as in there was no site at all but the domain was safe. Now its back up and running all the backlinks dont exists for some reason they have disapeared. My question is when googles dances will these backlinks reapear

    • Eric Transue

James, when you say your site went down for a month, what happened if I were to go to your domain during that time? Would I get a page not found, or just a blank page?

The Google Dance shouldn’t effect your backlinks, but I would need to know more about your site. Send me an email when you get a chance with the name of your site and what type of backlinks you were creating (i.e. forum posting, yahoo answers, articles, video…etc) and I’ll try to help you figure out what is going on.

  • http://www.demon-chat.com james flynn

Eric i think i found the answer. My site is a chatsite but it had blogs and forums plus a guestbook. since i remade the site there wasnt any of the same content that was there before. All i can think of is that the backlinks are not relevent anymore im trying to get it back how it was hopefully this should work. Also when i said the site went down the server owner quit there service but my domain was still pointing to there nameservers so the message was page not found.

    • Eric Transue

I’m glad you were able to find the issue.

If those old links no longer point to pages that exist on your site, you may want to look at implementing some sort of redirect.

That way even though the page doesn’t exist, that link when clicked will direct your visitors to your homepage or some other relevant page that you have.

  • James

Hi Eric, I have been doing some nice article marketing to get traffic to my blog. The google dance just happened to my article too. It was ranked first for the keyword & then it suddenly disappeared & is nowhere to be found even till the 63rd page. The article is about 2 days old. My question is this… when Google’s main crawl visits my article (king), then will it rank in No.1 agian for the keyword? Atleast will it rank in the first 2 pages if I continue to build backlinks. Approximately, how long does it take?

    • Eric Transue

James, keep going with your article marketing. Be sure to bookmark your articles on the sites that allow them as well as build up some backlinks to the articles. This will all help in pushing your main site higher up in the rankings.

Also many articles sites will provide an RSS feed of the articles you have published. Submit that RSS feed to RSS submission sites.

I wish I could give you a time frame for the “Google Dance”, but nobody really knows. For now don’t worry so much about your current position. Continue to consistently build your links and the high rankings will follow.

      Good luck James!

  • James

    Hey Eric,

I just had a question about the site disappearing thing. It happened to my site as well & I was wondering if it meant that when google’s main bot actually crawls your website, it will put you in the same position?

    • Eric Transue

James it’s hard to say the position you will reappear in. I have had sites come back above and some below the spot they originally showed up in.

My advice to you is to keep building relevant backlinks. If you stick with it you should definitely make your way back up to your original position or higher.

Right now I am using Dominic Tay’s “Article Submit Auto”. You can check it out here.

I like the product, I just wish it was a one time purchase and not a monthly fee. You login via the web to do all your submissions (no software to install) and it will submit to 30 article directories. Also, if you decide to start spinning the text of your articles in the future, to switch them up a bit, it allows you to use spun syntax.

I have tried a couple other standalone products, but I couldn’t get them to work correctly.

I have outsourced a fair bit of article submissions in the past as well.

The site has been up since august in one form or another… seems to be creeping back up in the ranks again though. It is back on the first page locally, just not at the top of the page quite yet [insert sigh of relief here] so I am working on building more links. Links are coming from directories, articles and more recently some blogs as well [on topic where possible]. How long does it typically take to get to a pr4 from a pr1… or does that just depend on when google does its update? Thanks for the link to your book, I will check that out!

    Wow awesome post
My site just dissapeared 2 days ago and i was worried google might have sand-boxed it, marked it as spam or penalized, but i feel better now thanks to your post, i hadn't build many backlinks to it so i got worried. Thanks you just gave me a sign of relief,
its only been 2 days since my site dissapeared, its only a 1 month old page and lots of people are battling for this keyword actively, could you give me an stimate on how long it would take for my site to be back? or does that just happen unkowingly when the king wants?
    thanks for the exelent post!

    • http://www.erictransue.com/ Eric Transue

Luis, I'm glad you found this post helpful.

Don't worry, I doubt your site has been sandboxed by Google. Keep building quality backlinks. Since your site is so new, don't overdue it. Just keep a nice steady pace going.

Unfortunately, I can't give you an estimate of how long it will take for Google to start listing you again. It really varies from site to site. The King has his way of doing things and likes to keep them secret. :)

Luis, is the site you are referring to the predator one you used in the url field for this comment? If so I am seeing it listed in Google.

      • http://www.thecbpredator.com/ Luis Carrillo

yes Eric that is the site that dissapeared for me
But i guess it never dissapeared like you said, what i meant to say is that it was ranking in the top 10 for my keyword, and all of a sudden it went down to ranking in the 180's( in a matter of hours)…so that's why i think i got penalized or something, but it is back in the top 10 as of yesterday, i did build a couple of high page rank backlinks.
Either way thanks man, i appreciate the help

        • http://www.erictransue.com/ Eric Transue

Luis, that's great that it is back in the top 10!

Keep building those links buddy….expand your keywords and dominate those as well :)

  • Heather

    Hi Eric,
My situation is a bit strange. My site had shown up on google once i googled my name (which is the title of my home page) and once i googled my url. But, yesterday i noticed if i google myself nothing comes up. If i google my url nothing comes up. These seem like really direct searches. I'm not working with keywords. Some people who live in other states/country can google my name and get my website. Or even google my URL and get my website. But I can not google my name from my own computer and laptop. Is this and SEO prob? Seems like somehow I'm hidden from myself! Or hidden from local searches. Any feedback would be great.

    • http://www.erictransue.com/ Eric Transue

Heather, don't worry this doesn't sound like a problem at all…yet. Do me a favor and type this into google without the quotes “site:yoursitename.com”. Of course put your site in there. Does anything come up?

You are most likely hitting a different Google datacenter or search server than those in other states/countries. Your site may be in the middle of the “google dance” on the server you are hitting. If you don't mind go ahead and reply with your url so I can take a look at what is going on. If you aren't comfortable go ahead and send it to me via my contact page at the top of my site or a DM on twitter Eric's Twitter

      • Heather

Eric, thanks for the speedy response! I tried your suggestion of typing “site:mysitename.com” in google and nothing came up. Here is my URL.

        Thanks !

        • http://www.erictransue.com/ Eric Transue

Heather the good news is, it is showing up for me. I also used this multiple Google data center search tool and it is showing up in the different locations I tried.

Do you have a Google account? If you do and are signed in, try going to Google.com again and clicking “sign out” in the top right before doing your search. If you don't have an account, do you have any toolbars installed? Also what browser are you using, IE, FIrefox, Safari?

          • Heather

            Eric,
I do have a google/gmail account. I am not signed in. I signed in and then signed out just to be sure. I am unable to see my site via google on my home computer, lap top, or office computer. I have been checking google analytics on all three computers could this have done something?

I have been using IE and Firefox 3.6. I am not using any toolbars other than the navigation tool bar, menu, bar.
Could someone have blocked my site from being seen locally? Is that even possible?

if i enter my address in the navigation toolbar it goes directly to my site. Just not in the google search. Tried typin my website and my name in the multiple google search site link you provided and no luck….

          • http://www.erictransue.com/ Eric Transue

Heather, I just tried your site again and I am no longer seeing it in the search results.

Your site is new so sit tight. This is normal. Keep building quality backlinks and it will return.

            Thanks so much Eric. :)

            Hi Eric,

I think my husband is in the same situation as heather’s. His university homepage (not a business just identifies his department, field of work, and contact information) which for years has been the number one result when he googles his name is not longer coming up. Even if he googles the url for the homepage it doesn’t come up. If he enters the address in the navigation toolbar it goes directly to the homepage. Interestingly, when he googles himself on bing the homepage appears as the number one result.

I promised him I’d look into it and saw your blog, which is really informative. Seems like his situation is closest to heather’s. I tried to follow your advice to her and googled his url by typing typing “site:mysitename.com” and the homepage does come up. still nothing on google though.

            Any ideas?

            thanks so much in advance!

Hi I registered a site and put go wordpress on it about 10 days ago checked the domain name today and it appeared no 1 in google and then re checked it 2 min later and now its totaly disapperaed even when the name is in ” “
    any idea what happened

    • http://www.erictransue.com/ Eric Transue

Joe, your site is really new and it is common to see it jump around in the Google rankings like this. It is known as the “Google Dance”. I'd give it a while to stop “dancing” and settle into a more consistent position. Go ahead and send me an email on my content page with your site name and I'll take a look at it.

  • http://plussizetankini.org Tracy

Eric Thanks so much for answering this question. My site was in the top 10 and then nothing, gone, way to the back of the line. The manor in with you explained this was great, very easy to understand. Thanks again

    • http://www.erictransue.com/ Eric Transue

Tracy, I'm glad my post was easy to understand.

Don't stress over the “Google Dance”, just keep building quality links and you'll be fine.

  • http://twitter.com/fungamesarena FUN GAMES ARENA

Great post thanks a lot. And I have a question. I have a website with 3 years domain and my website not showing in main search terms for 10 days. When my website back? How many times to take this process? will I wait more? :(

    • http://www.erictransue.com/ Eric Transue

Wait it out and be patient. Just keep building links from quality sites that relate to the site you are trying to rank.

I can't tell you exactly how long it will take to return to the rankings but don't stress about it to much. Just keep creating content and building links to that content.

  • http://www.organiclifestyles4you.com Cleta

I have a website and when I type it in the search bar – the front page comes up & then it goes away & it looks like it's being searched for. What would cause this?

    • http://www.erictransue.com/ Eric Transue

Cleta can you give me a little more info about your issue? I'm not sure I quite understand. Is this happening after clicking on your page in the search results or after typing it into the address bar?

  • Madelaine

    Great info Eric.
I am trying to find out this kind of info these days. I have about 15 of my sites totally disappear from google ranking these last few days. They all show up in Yahoo, but not Google. Some I have had for about 1 year, some are really new. They have all showed up on the first page of Google at one point, sometimes staying there fora a along time, but now there is nothing. The only thing that i have done different is that I have added contact us, disclaimer, terms of service and privacy police pages to all of them because that is what I heard Google wants @@ I have to admit that they all have the same content on them since it is privacy matters ans stuff like that, it is hard to write original content for that. Can that have anything to do with it? How would i know if I got sandboxed by Google. It is not like they would send a mail letting me know, right? @@
Any thoughts about why all my sites all of a sudden are gone?
    Madelaine

    • http://www.erictransue.com/ Eric Transue

Madelaine, I need a little more info from you. Are all of these sites hosted on the same IP address?

I wouldn't worry about having the same contact, disclaimer and terms of service pages on each site. The only time you will see problems with duplicate content is when you have duplicate content on the same site. Others may tell you different, but I'd have to disagree with them.

I don't see why adding those pages would take your sites out of the rankings. Your sites may just be doing the “Google Dance” because you have added new content to them.

Let me know about the IP question above and/or send me an email (top of the page, contact tab) and I'll try to help you out.

      • Madelaine

Yes, they are all hosed on the same ip…
I know that could be a problem
How do i get around that?
(some of them are actually starting to come back a little, so the google dance might be right)

        • http://www.erictransue.com/ Eric Transue

Madelaine, I'm glad to hear your domains are starting to come back. There is no set rule on how many you should be hosting on the same IP, but I personally like to keep the number low.

You can use a Hosting company such as Hostnine which allows you to choose a region your site is hosted in each time you create a new one. This helps to not only spread your sites out geographically, but they also get different IPs.

      • Madelaine

        Also,
How many domains can I have under the same ip?

  • Madelaine

I forgot to say that the site shows up fine when I do a site:www.example.com

    • http://www.erictransue.com/ Eric Transue

Madelaine, go ahead and send me an email with your site URL and a keyword you were ranking for, when you get a chance.

  • http://www.sap-exp.com/ SAP Business

    hi Eric,

I have some doubt… My problem is, If I search my keyword in google then my site was shown up in page 1 for a while (maybe one or two months) and then it disappear for now. This is google dance?

    • http://www.erictransue.com/ Eric Transue

It's hard to say with 100% certainty if it is the Google dance or not. The fact that you were on page 1 for some time is a good sign.

Have you continued to build quality links to your site? If you haven't I suggest you do. If you have…that's great, continue doing it.

f you want to make your link building easier you can use a service like Seo Link Vine or one of the other great link building services that are out there.

  • Dorrine Conrad

I can see my site on the Internet, but when I go to my google account I can't access it. Also, most of my blog postings are missing as well. I'm not very computer savy and have written to Google numerous times without help…please help!

    • http://www.erictransue.com/ Eric Transue

Dorrine, when you say you can't access it do you mean it is not showing up in Google search results, or the site isn't showing up when you type they address in your address bar?

  • Sara

Sara your site is still pretty new if you launched it 2 weeks ago. Don't worry…I'm sure this is just the Google dance and you will return.

In fact when I search Google for your keywords I am seeing your support page come up on page 2, position 18 overall in Google.

Work on building quality backlinks and you'll be fine. I have been using Seo Link Vine and seeing great results. However, you can do it without a paid service like that…it's just a little more time consuming. Good luck to you!

      • Vracan

what do you mean by backlinks?

        • http://www.erictransue.com/ Eric Transue

Thanks for your question. Backlinks are links from other sites on the web that point to your page or website. These “other sites” can be other blogs, articles, video sites, Facebook, Twitter…etc.

  • Sara

Thanks Eric for this great post.

This is fantastic news, my 1 year old site just disappeared from google 2 days ago, even when i type its fullname, followed by .com which is the number one search term used by customers to find my site.

Does google do this when i dramatically changed the frontpage? Its completely different from how it was 3 days ago, then all of a sudden i cant find it in google, however i can see internal page links, but not the main site itself. My linkbacks have been increasing though. Does this make sense?

    • http://www.erictransue.com/ Eric Transue

Darren, this definitely makes sense. When you dramatically change a page, like you did, you’ll often see it “dance” around a bit in the Google rankings. Don’t stress about it. Keep building quality backlinks and make sure the changes you made don’t involve any spammy techniques such as keyword stuffing. Be sure to check back and let me know how things turn out.

You can type this into Google without the quotes to see all the pages they have listed for your site “site:yoursitename.com”

  • Randy

This post was made more than a year ago. Is this kind of thing applicable even now?

The same problem happened to me 2 weeks ago. I can’t find all the pages of my website in Google for all the keywords we’ve been building back links for 5 months. So far our link building campaign has been successful as our site gradually climbed up the ranking until this thing happened. Btw, the website is 11 years old (adult e-commerce) so I don’t believe it got ‘sandboxed’ nor penalized by Google. This is the first time I encountered such problem.

It’s quite a relief to read this ‘temporary thing’ going on with Google (thanks to your post) but I am always worried unless I see my site back to its previous status. How long should I wait before everything comes back to normal?

    • http://www.erictransue.com/ Eric Transue

Randy, first off thanks for stopping by.

Yes, everything in this post still applies. Your situation is a little different than what I discus in this post because of the age of your site and because your site is an “adult” site.

Google has been tweaking there search results lately as can be seen by the “live search results” and the page previews they allow you to do now. However, I would not worry too much about the disappearance of your site from the search results. Make sure you backlinks are coming from quality sites that are related to your niche.

I would continue to build links and give it some time. This is most likely a temporary thing. If you don’t see your site back in the search results in a week or two, shoot me an email and I’ll try to help you out.

      • Randy

        Hi Eric,

Thanks for your response. It’s been 2 weeks since your reply and unfortunately my Google listings aren’t back – a total of 1 month now. It’s really frustrating – the traffic to my site is also affected by the disappearance.

Will shoot you an email. Your help is much appreciated. Many thanks again!

        -Randy

      • Randy

I sent you a PM Eric. Hope you got it. Thanks!

  • Damojackson

Hi Eric. I’ve seen you in the WPGM and stumbled upon you here by chance!I’m just getting really annoyed by what’s going on and nobody seems to have the answer to fix this problem.I’ve got a few sites that disappear for up to 6 or 7 days at a time, then reappear for a day or two then disappear again. They all follow the same pattern and have been doing so for about 6 months. They are not knew sites, about 6 months to a year old!I’ve tried deep linking and i do this using a quality service Build My Rank! I’ve also used EZArticle Link, social bookmarking etc! The pattern still continues.I admit that much of the content on these sites is duplicate as i use the ReviewAzon plugin for content but i always add unique content to the pages as well.Everyone just says give it time, but after six months how much more time am i supposed to give it!How do you suggest i deal with this? If you want i can give you a PM with one of my urls! Cheers.

    • http://www.erictransue.com/ Eric Transue

Good to see a fellow Goldminer here. I love that site! :)

Please PM me with one of your URLs that is having an issue and I’ll see if I can help you.

Quick question. When doing your searches are you logged into a Google account?

Also when you say your sites disappear, do they just get dropped from their previous rank or do they vanish from the search results all together?

      Look forward to your PM.

      • Damojackson

Hi Eric. Thanks for the reply, i’ve PM’d you with a couple of urls.

Regarding the google account. Yes most of the time i’m logged in. Does this make a difference do you think?

If i write in the entire url into google then the pages will appear. However if i’m doing a product review for example and i type in the full product keyword, which will be quite long, it still doesn’t show up! This is even if i have tons of backlinks etc. It’s as if they entirely vanish from the search results. However they will show up for maybe 1 or 2 days out of every 8 or 9 and then vanish again.

        Any help is appreciated. Cheers.

        • http://www.erictransue.com/ Eric Transue

Hi Damian, I definitely do see my sites move around quite a bit when I’m logged into Google

          I did get your PM.

I’ll check out your URLs and let you know what I find. Give me a day or two to get back to you.

          • Damojackson

Hi Eric. Thanks for taking the time to check out my urls.

Just an update…The first url i gave you seems to suddenly have come back and under all the keywords they were once there for! I’ll repeat that this isn’t a google dance because the site is not new.

After i pm’d you, i added another page of unique content to my site. I’ve done this a few times recently and have never been able to get any of my pages indexed. Now all of a sudden, all my pages have shown up, with great ranking too!

If i can guess as to a reason for all this then it would be that google is moving away from the pulled content plugins. Think about it from a user experience point of view. If they want a product review and they type in the product name, they would only be seeing a front page full of near identical reviews which have all been pulled from amazon.com. This may explain why for 1 day a week my site is there and then it’s gone for the rest of the week. Is google rotating sites now? Possibly!

Now that all the pages are unique and there’s enough of it on there, google has suddenly brought my site back. Of course i’ll keep you posted if it stays or goes.

The second url i gave you, which is all pulled content using the ReviewAzon plugin is still popping on and off google every day! In fact this is happening to about 7 of my domains. I’ll be interested in your opinion. Cheers mate.

          • http://www.erictransue.com/ Eric Transue

Damian, I’ve had a chance to take a look at the first site you sent me.

I do see it listed on page 2 for the main keywords and that’s stayed pretty consistent since I’ve been watching it.

For some of the other pages/keywords I do see them moving around in the rankings and as I write this a few of them are ranking pretty low in the Google Search results (greater than page 10).

            A couple of observations…

I don’t see any meta descriptions on your pages. I would definitely create a meta description for each page and make sure your keyword is in it.

I also don’t see many backlinks pointing to your individual pages. I would definitely work at trying to increase those from a couple different sources (articles, blogs, etc.) If you need any recommendations on this, I know a great traffic building course that covers everything in great detail.

Also, concentrate on creating unique content. It will take you a bit longer to build your site, but you’re pages will stand out a bit more in the eyes of Google.

It’s impossible to know what Google is doing behind the scenes and it’s very possible they are testing new things that effect your sites.

But with that being said by concentrating on building quality links from relevant sites and creating content that is not only unique but interesting and informative you give yourself the best opportunity to get good rankings.

Sorry I can’t tell you exactly why your sites are bouncing around, but hopefully the info I have provided was helpful.

  • Andy

I am having this same problem. My money site was on page 6 but my satellite sites were ranking higher. My money site is nowhere to be found although google says its indexed my satellite sites are still ranking high though.

  • http://www.erictransue.com/ Eric Transue

Andy, first off congrats on creating “satellite sites.”. Many just focus on their main site and overlook driving traffic from other web properties they control. Have you made any changes as far as back linking to your money site recently?

You’re welcome Alex. Little things like that can often make a big difference when working with Google rankings. And cause huge headaches! :)

    Hi Eric,
    Very good article.
Just this morning (Indonesian time) one of my site got a very very few visitors. I tried to search some keywords which is my site usually get page 1 or 2 in Google but today it is nothing.
However when I tried to search “some keywords site:mysite.com” it appears in Google. That means my site is still indexed by Google. Is it also because of Google dance and going to be back to normal again?

    Thanks

    • http://www.erictransue.com/ Eric Transue

Fuad, if you haven’t made any drastic changes recently to your site layout or content. And haven’t done any questionable backlinking I would say this is most likely the Google dance. Give it some time and see if your site returns to it’s previous rankings.

I am finishing up some free training videos on how to dig deeper into Google and see exactly what you can do to increase your chances of ranking higher. I hope to have them done early next week, so please check back for the link.

      • http://twitter.com/fuadnahdi Fuad NAHDI

        Thanks Eric for your answer.
As usual I just added new posts. Specially this morning I installed and activated Hyper Cache (cache system for WordPress) but I am sure it shouldn’t be the cause. It’s really terrible.

        • http://www.erictransue.com/ Eric Transue

Yeah, if you just added Hyper Cache this morning I highly doubt that is your issue. Most likely it’s Google just making some changes. Hang in there. Keep building up other traffic streams such as article and video marketing. And definitely continue to build quality, related backlinks to your site.

Hi Eric, I stumbled upon your site a few days ago. I too have my site disappear and it is one month already. My site is about 8 months old. Most of my main keywords were listed on the first page of google and I was beginning to make some small money (not much but I was excited anyway). However the keywords keeps appearing and disappearing alternate week about 3 months ago. Now my main keywords don’t appear at all for about 1 month now but my site is still there when I put site:mysite.com in google search. It is just that my keywords do not appear in google search. Why is that? I do add backlinks using a paid service which gradually build my backlink. Can u help me? Thanks

  • bernie

Hi Eric, hope you can help me with this because all these sound very strange to me and ive tried looking for answers but noone seem to be able give a reasonable explanation, which they admitted. lol

Most of my website keywords are well within the first 5 top rankings for the first 4 months, but just last week, they were nowhere to be found (dropped more than 100+ positions). The funny thing is when i type mydomain.com in google.com, it is still there. However in google.com.au and google.com.sg where im from, i dont even see my website within the first 10 pages. I guessed i was penalized but my website are still showing in google.co.uk and google.com. So im really wondering what went wrong.

Most of my keywords are still dropping in SERP daily.

-webpages are still indexed with healthy numbers. (site:mydomain.com)
-website is about 4 months old (google-dance? sandbox? not sure because of what i explained above)
-keywords are mostly very low competition ones, about 2k search results.
-backlinking has been done when this website is about a month old. After the sudden drop in SERP, ive been building some backlinks again.

Any ideas? especially when specific country google SE above?

    Thanks and regards

    • http://www.erictransue.com/ Eric Transue

Hi Bernie, thanks for stopping by.

Did the sites you saw drop ever come back up in the rankings?

It’s a good sign that you are still seeing your sites/pages indexed in Google. Because you are seeing these results it’s unlikely you are sandboxed.

I’m curious to know how you build your backlinks? Do some of them happen to be from the countries you are ranking high in?

I have a site based in the US but it gets traffic mainly from Australia. After looking into my backlinks for this site, I noticed some of the more relevant sites linking to me were actually Australlian sites. This probably explains why I’m ranking decently on google.com.au and getting quite a bit of traffic from there.

I’m working on building higher quality links to this site from US based sites to see if that helps with my ranking on Google.com. I’m sure it will.

Let me know if your sites are still ranking below position 100 and I’ll look further into it with you.

      • Bluesky

Hi Eric, i have the same case like yours. I have a site based in the US but it gets traffic mainly from Australia. When I search in google.com.au it shows page 1. But if i use google.com it shows in page 4. How it can be?
You said that backlinks came from Australlian sites.
I want to ask you, how to find backlinks of my site come from?
Please I need your help.. Thanks before

Hey I am just wondering, it has been about 4-5 days since my website disappeared from Google search. Is that normal? :S

    • Eric Transue

Hi Jason, 4 to 5 days is definitely not out of the ordinary. Is this a new site?

      • http://www.bladeandsoulguide.com Jason

Yea its fairly new >< Registered about 8 days ago.

        • Eric Transue

If it’s only 8 days old Jason, don’t worry about it too much. Just make sure not to get over aggressive with your link building right off the bat. Since it’s so new you’ll probably see it jump around quite a bit – which is perfectly normal.

          • http://www.bladeandsoulguide.com Jason

Ok thanks so much Eric for all the help! :P Haven’t started on link building yet, still adding contents :)

          • Eric Transue

No problem Jason! Make sure you add high quality content that your users will get value out of. Too many people use tactics like stuffing a bunch of keywords in their post in order to rank high in the search engines. Go ahead and sprinkle them in here and there, but first and foremost write for your target audience – not the search engines. You’ll see much better results in the long run.

Stop by any time if you have more questions.

          • http://www.bladeandsoulguide.com Jason

            will certainly do :) cheers!

Hi Eric! Firstly, thank you for the insightful information about the Site disappearance from Google.

I have a problem whereby I used to have traffic from typing keywords into Google Search. E.g Brand labels without my domain name. However, now the searches seem to have completely disappeared from Google. This has happened for a week already and I cant figure out why.

Thank you for your kind help.

    • Eric Transue

Brendan, how long where the results showing up in Google before they disappeared? Day, weeks, months?

Also were you logged into any Google services like Gmail when doing those searches?

      • http://chicprinceb.wordpress.com/ Brendan

        Hi Eric

        Thank you for your reply.

I have been awarded with views from Google for at least 6 months.
However, this seems to have reduced for more than a week.

I have tried logging off from Gmail but my web link is still either at page 11 of the Google search bar or not to be seen at all in Google’s search engine.

I am not sure as to what I should do to boost the Google search results from my page. I have subscribed to Google webmaster without results. I am unsure as to how Google indexes the webpages as well.

        Thank you.

  • http://www.theproofreadingbureau.com James lamont

    Hi Eric. Great blog.

After weeks of SEO on my site, i was bouncing off the walls when i finally appeared on the top page. But after a few days, i realised my cache in Google kept my search results for my keywords and i was viewing old results. I tested my site using other browsers and i wasn’t even in the top 100 pages. I can still see my site using site: URL on Google search.

Is it all about patience? Should i eventually come back to the top page?
I’d love to have an idea of how many days, weeks it will be…

    • Eric Transue

James I can’t answer for sure if you’ll return to the top page. It depends on how competitive the keyword you are targeting is and how much SEO work you are doing to increase your rankings.

Are you currently doing any type of link building?

  • http://tlq.yolasite.com/ Kjell

Fantastic post, i kept wondering why my new site originally was ranking about 40th, then has disappeared off the main rankings all together for a few days. If i’m posting updates every couple days (And as a blog that means the content of the main site is changing every couple days) can i expect to fall off the radar regularly?

Thanks for your help Whey Protein Benefits /a>

    Are purchased back-links a scam?

    • Eric Transue

John, I don’t want to make a blanket statement and say they are all a scam. But just like most things, there are scams out there.

It is possible to purchase legit backlinks for your site. If you are curious about a service go ahead and post it here or shoot me an email and I’d be happy to give you my opinion of it.

Hey Eric, great post here, its such a common problem for marketers, create a new site… woohooo page 1, two days later.. tumbleweed!! I agree with what your first commenter said, makes you think “oh great what have I done now, but be a little patient and low and behold, if you’ve done your seo correctly you’ll bounce right back!! :)

    • Eric Transue

Definitely agree! Thanks for stopping by. :)

    Hi Eric,

Great article, just wondering if the same thing applies to yahoo. last week, I changed my meta tag description a bit. A couple of days later I was doing a yahoo search on my site but my site disappeared the funny thing is the google search is doing fine. Do I have to resubmit my site to yahoo or do nothing and let yahoo sort it out? cheers Eric.

    • Eric Transue

Joe, I’m not sure about Yahoo. I wouldn’t submit your site though. Let the search engines find it organically. I’ve had much better results building content and letting the search engines find my sites on their own.

Thanks for this great article, I have a question related to the period it takes before the alarm is raised.

I have a website that was doing well for its main keyword, howerver it has disappeared from that keyword serp for 10 days now, shall I start to panic or just wait a bit more.

I think I might have over optimised to loose the value of the domain keyword. Or is it the new update has reduced the value of the domainname in relation to serp? Over all the site is increasing in terrafic from other keywords that I didn’t spend time optimizing.

    • Eric Transue

I find this the case quite often as well. I get most of my traffic from keywords that I haven’t optimized for.

I think this is a excellent reason to focus more on providing high quality content for actual readers, than optimized content for search engines.

hi I have about 20 first page results on google and a lot of the were first page however after about 2 years of being on page one last night all my searches that were page 1 have disapeared and I am very worried. Some of the searches are still page 1 and some of them arent page one. These searches links that are now not page one are not ranking at all. Its not as though they have dropped down in ranking etc they are simply now not ranking at all. I am hoping this is just a ranking issue and once the spiders rank again these links will be found again. I have not changed anything at all on these pages. My only concern is either being hacked or I am hoping that they will go back to where they were before. I re activated my google adwords account at the same time as this dropped down and this is the only think that I have done differently. I have not made on change on these pages. I did some internal linking changes to the pages about 3-4 weeks ago but this didnt effect in the short term so i assume this wouldnt have caused issues now after this amount of time. I really want to resolve this problem and any advice would be greatly appreciated. Please help and ask me if you need any more information.

    • Eric Transue

Anthony, Google has been making quite few changes that are impacting how sites are ranked. I’d probably lean towards this being the main reason for the sudden change as opposed to being hacked or activating your Adwords account. Have your rankings recovered at all yet?

Thanks for the post. I thought that it was strange how one of my posts went from number two to nowhere to be found. I hope to see it up there again soon.

    Thanks,
    Andy

    • Eric Transue

      You’re welcome Andy!

Hang in there. It can be real frustrating when you see your site popping in and out of the rankings. But concentrate on creating quality content and you should see it start to climb again soon.

Great article! Thanks for explaining so simple!
My website disappeared about a week ago from google search except from one keyword. Could it be the same case you are describing above? The content is very unique and really high quality.
Should i expect it back soon?
    Thanks a lot!

    • Eric Transue

      I’m glad you liked it.

I wouldn’t panic yet. Keep building quality links and creating quality content. You should see it return soon if it hasn’t already.

      Best of luck to you!

  • Mark

My site is about 3 months old and I was ranked 400 for my most important keyword, then 100 and then disappeared completely. It is still indexed though. Should I be worried?

    • http://www.erictransue.com/ Eric Transue

Mark, I wouldn’t worry about it. If it doesn’t return in a few weeks, let me know.
