Win Customers Over By Sticking Out From The Crowd

Happy Couple Buying Online

Do you have your customer’s best interest in mind?

I’ll be honest there definitely is a dark side to Internet Marketing. A side that will take a customer and do anything possible to achieve a goal. The customer often ends up getting screwed in the long run and is not better off than they were before.

In fact often they are in a worse position.

If you want to succeed online and stick out from the crowd – put your customer first. Sadly this seems to be an old fashioned way of thinking. But it works!

You see I sell a product online that allows you to easily integrate Google Website Optimizer in order to split test posts and pages on WordPress.

Last night I got an email with the subject “Urgent Support Please.”

The user had purchased my plugin and was having an issue getting it working. He was in a bit of a bind because he was going live with a paid advertising campaign and wanted to split test the paid traffic and see which page was performing best.

I always try to provide support in a timely matter, but last night I was busy and realized my customer was facing a deadline.

I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to resolve his issue before his deadline, but I was aware of another great split testing product on the market that I use for more advanced split tests on some of my sites.

I knew he could get a 7 day free trial of that software and easily have it up and running in time to meet his deadline.

Although it doesn’t integrate with Google Website Optimizer it does do a great job of reporting on split tests in real time and helping you choose a winner.

So I replied to the Urgent email and let the user know that I was busy and if he couldn’t wait till today for me to provide support I would refund his money.

But a refund was not going to help him resolve his issue.

So I also sent a link to the trial of Visual Website Optimizer. By doing this I was potentially wiping out a sale of my own product and I was also sending him to a different split testing product.

Stupid? Some might think so – but I received a reply that was very appreciative.

The user ended up extending the deadline a day and I was able to login last night and get my plugin working for him. He had a custom template that was missing some common lines of code that most WordPress themes come standard with. So it was really a simple fix.

And by getting it fixed before his deadline I ended up not having to refund the sale. But even if I did, the sale was not my focus. My focus was on helping my customer meet his deadline for his urgent issue. If that meant pointing him towards another product that would do the job – then I was happy to do it.

By putting the focus on your customer and truly wanting to solve their issues, you separate yourself from the crowd that is just about the money and could care less about the customer’s true needs.

Your customers will realize this – and your business will benefit in the long run.

Are You Running Split Tests?

If you aren’t split testing on your own website, I highly advise you look into it.

Here are the products I discussed above – the top one is mine and the second one is great if you want to do some advanced split testing on your site. It allows you to do some really cool stuff – and set it up all visually.
