What is CommentLuv?

UPDATE:  Although I love CommentLuv I am trying out some new plugins to better manage the comments and conversations taking place here on my blog.  For the time being I have disabled CommentLuv, but may enable it again in the future.

UPDATE 2:  I’ve re-enabled Comment Luv in an effort to test out some plugins. You can see them in action below. One allows you to subscribe to comment updates and the other allows you to get my newsletter and other exclusive content such as my Product Creation Report. Go ahead and check the boxes next to each one to see them in action.

If you have ever posted a comment on my site you may have noticed a little checkbox and icon under the submit button that says “CommentLuv”.

So what is CommentLuv and why do I have it installed?

CommentLuv is a WordPress plugin.

For those that aren’t aware, this site is run on WordPress.  WordPress is a blog publishing platform that makes it easy to add and manage content on a blog.

A WordPress plugin, is a small addon that gives a blog more functionality.  There are many WordPress plugins which allow you to optimize your blog for search engines, modify how pictures are displayed and everything in between.

CommentLuv was created to grow the blogging community and to encourage interaction between bloggers.

This is how it works.  When CommentLuv is enabled on a blog, the checkbox and CommentLuv icon is activated on each blog post.  When a user leaves a comment on one of my blog posts, the plugin automatically goes out and searches their blog for the latest post. If it finds one, it automatically adds a titled link at the end of the comment which links back to their post.

This works out great for both parties.

By having CommentLuv enabled on my site, I hope that it encourages visitors to comment that may otherwise leave without posting one.  Of course I hope the comment sparks some discussion and isn’t just a spam comment (those will not be approved).

The person leaving the comment wins as well.  If they have a blog, they have now created a link back to their site.  This link will hopefully benefit them in the search engines.  It will also allow my other readers the ability to see what the person who left the comment is blogging about and if they are interested, I hope they will visit the link.

If you have a WordPress blog, I highly recommend installing CommentLuv.

I know some don’t like to send traffic away from their site.  I’m confident that even if you leave my site to check out another, if I create good content that you want to read, you’ll be back.

You will won’t you? :)

Do you have a blog?  If so feel free to leave a comment and give it a try.

Great communicative post Eric and I totally agree with you. Even though “Comment Luv” send readers away from the site, they will come back for more of the great content provided.

Thanks for briefing us on this WP plugin. I will give it a try !

I completely agree with you. CommentLuv is a win win application. Even if the traffic goes away to another site if the content is good they are going to come back. If they don’t may be we should work on the content than closing the doors :-)

The plugin is awesome. I actually have commentluv, keywordluv and dofollow installed on my blog. And to tell you the truth I actually go looking for blogs that have commentluv installed when I want to go blog hopping and meet new people.

I often find myself going through peoples comments on a post. Reading the commentluv titles of posts and if I like what I see I go exploring.

I have met some amazing people doing this over the last few months.

I wish more people knew about the benefits of this little plugin! I recently operated a blog commenting challenge and having the commentluv plugin installed was one of my prerequisites.

Reply

Eric Transue April 20, 2011 at 12:37 am

Hi Lo, thanks for your comment.

Disqus does not have a captcha system. However, with that said, it does a very good job of handling spam. I get very few spam comments that get through the filters Disqus uses. And the system Disqus uses to identify spam is always learning. So it gets better over time.

Disqus offers quite a few options such as only allowing registered Disqus users to post, or only registered users with a verified email. It will also integrate with Akismet.

Here is a page with a little more info that may help you out http://disqus.com/docs/spam/

If you have further questions about it, please feel free to reply to this message with them.

Reply

Eric Transue June 6, 2011 at 3:37 pm

Robert, I don’t believe Disqus has a comment system. However, I do find that it does an extremely good job at identifying spam and filtering it out.

I have tried quite a few Wordpress plugins for filtering and deleting spam on Wordpress comments. Disqus has worked the best for my needs.

Not only does it do a great job with spam, I really enjoy the interface they use to approve, delete and reply to comments. It makes it real easy for me to go in and reply to several comments rather quickly.

I also receive an email from Disqus when a new comment is posted. I can reply, approve or delete the comment by simply replying to that email, which is pretty cool.

Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any other questions and I’ll try to answer them.

All I want to say is I like commentluv. I do realize that a website may get a lot of comments that are spammy, but I found that many of the blogs I visit that have commentluv attract regular commenters with high quality comments.

It really comes down to good posts. People will not leave good comment if they do not find value in what they read.

But I will warn you, spam does come with these plugins. Many people find sites with these plugins installed to be an easy target to get a quick back link. As long as the comment is meaningful, I’ll usually approve it. But there are quite a few that are just fishing for a link without providing any value…and those I delete.

Hi Tracey, glad you found my site.

I’ve been back and forth on Comment Luv. And as you can see at the time of your posting, I have it installed.

I advise anyone that is interested in it to go ahead and install it. Some like it. Some don’t. But the only way to find out if you do is to give it a try. :)

I’ve thought about using CommentLuv on some of my sites; the trouble is I already get mostly spam comments and I don’t want to promote that :p

I wish there was a better solution than CAPTCHAs; all they seem to do is annoy the legitimate users.

William, I re-activated Commentluv on my site a few weeks back and I haven’t noticed a huge increase in spam.

There are a few plugins you can use that blacklist well known spammer IPs that you may want to look into.

Are you using any plugins besides Akismet?

Thank you. This was very useful info as I just recently added IntenseDebate for comments on my blog and I activated the CommentLuv plugin but I was still unsure as to how exactly it worked. Now after reading this post I get it, and it has even encouraged me to be more interactive with other bloggers alike. Thanks again!

i am hesitate about this plugin. can you give the benefit and the weakness of this plugin. Because guest can put comment and their website link. it can reduce your page rank on Google. isn’t right?

From many days I have been hearing about CommentLuv from many of my SEO friends who have been using this WordPress plugin to retrieve a post belonging to their site. The way commentluv is revolutionizing the blogging world, I just love commentluv :-)

Commentluv generates quality backlinks. I am amazed also on knowing spammers don’t use this ( and hopefully won’t use this one ever). This plug in really works. It enables a person to post their recent posts at the end of their comments. A good give and take relationship between bloggers.
Happy Day :)

Thanks for stopping by Joanne.

Just like any plugin that allows someone to get a link on your site, you will see some spammers with this plugin. But if you have a good spam plugin installed and moderate your comments you should be fine.

Eric, like many other posters here I too wasn’t understanding what CommentLuv was about. Your explanation was easy to understand.
I think CommentLuv is a win/win for both parties. It encourages people to post comments and increases regular visitors to come plus you can often increase the quality of your page by including well written comments which Google puts value on and delete spammy ones at your discretion.

Commentluv had held it’s newest version. it’s the “COMMENTLUV PREMIUM” I haven’t see the feature that it offers but I guess it’s a great innovation which aim to improve and facilitate a better internet marketing that will give more benefits. Looking forward for more info’s about commentluv.

It sucks to see such a great plugin fading in popularity throughout the blogosphere. I personally think CommentLuv is one of the best, most under utilized plugins on the market. It really enriches the user experience of a website by stimulating interaction. Hopefully more websites will start using it, or simply continue using it for that matter.

Thanks you. I needed a good explanation. Every other site just keeps telling me why to use Commentluv, not what it is. This is the first time using commentluv too.
