Do You Create or React to Events in Your Life?

by Eric Transue on June 27, 2009

I was sitting in my lazy boy recliner the other night listening to a Tony Robbins CD.  I like to try to learn as much as possible in my down time and Tony Robbins is one of the most motivational people you could ever hear coming through your headphones.

Something that he said hit me.

I don’t remember the exact quote because it was kind of a delayed reaction.  I was already off doing something else when it all clicked.

What he said was along the lines of “are your reacting to events in life or are you creating events.”

This really was a light bulb moment for me.

Stop and think about it for a sec…

Do you have a full time 9 to 5 job?  If the answer is yes what happens at that job?

If it is like most jobs, you are probably spending a majority of your day reacting to events.

An email comes in from a boss or colleague asking about the progress of a latest project.  Reacting.

Your boss stops by and says he needs you to stay late tonight.  Reacting.

A business trip is scheduled for the end of the month, so you must rearrange your personal schedule.  Reacting again!

Now let’s look at the other side of the coin.

Picture yourself starting your own online business.  Now think about your day to day activities.

You want to take a trip at the end of the month for a conference or Meetup.  Creating.

You decide you would like to create some new blog posts for your site.  Creating.

You decide you would like a new stream of money coming in, so you start brainstorming a new product.  Creating again!

Of course there is going to be both reacting and creating in either situation.

However, when you are doing something you enjoy and create a business for yourself, the majority of your time is going to be spent creating and a minority will be spent reacting.

Take some time to think about the time you spend reacting to events vs creating events in your life.

Which do you enjoy more?  Which cause you less stress?

Hopefully, the answer is clear.

Now go out there and create!
