I spend quite a bit of time reading other blogs and forums to see what the latest trends are in Internet Marketing.
When creating a new site, the thing I see hammered on the most is Keyword Research.
“How many times are the keywords searched? How much competition does the keyword have? Are there authority sites in the top 10?”
Now don’t get me wrong, I do my fair share of keyword research…but to put it as #1 when creating a site, in my eyes is just wrong.
I have sites that bring in money that don’t rank in the top 200 for any of the keywords that I use on the site.
Now of course I could get them up there by focusing on them and putting the time in to it. But guess what? I don’t have to.
There are so many other ways to get people to your site.
- Forum Commenting
- PPC
- CPV
- Article Marketing
- Video Marketing
- on and on and on
So you are probably starting to wonder, “if keyword research isn’t the most important, then what is?”
Well the answer is simple. You have to know your audience!
I don’t care how much traffic you send to your site, if you don’t know your audience inside and out, you are not going to benefit from that traffic.
How do you find out what your audience wants? Well with the help of Google its’ quite simple.
Put yourself in their shoes for a day. Search for sites related to your topic and visit those sites.
What are they talking about? What questions are they asking? What answers receive the most thanks and appreciation?
Spend a couple of hours…or even better, a couple of days reading up on the subject you are creating your site about.
Learn everything you need to know to provide a benefit to your visitors.
You may want to read that last sentence again.
…Provide a benefit to your visitors.
Once you find out how you can help them find what they are looking for, you and your site will find success.
