When You Find Your Passion, You’ll Find You Niche

by Eric Transue on June 13, 2009

What do you love to do?

When you get online what are the first sites you visit?

What topics do you get excited about during discussions with
your friends?

Answer these questions and you will be well on your way to finding out what you should be doing with your life to make you happy.

As children growing up we are taught in school that the successful people are Doctors and Lawyers.

Why do most think they are successful?

Mainly because those are high paying careers.  They are high paying careers, but does having a high salary make you a success?  My answer is no, but I’m sure some would love to debate me on that.

I have a little bit of a different formula to determine success.  It’s really simple.  Do you enjoy what you
are doing?  If you don’t, you are drastically limiting your chances of becoming a success.

This leads me to a something I recently read.

Douglas Quenqua wrote the following piece in the NYTimes recently

“According to a 2008 survey by Technorati, which runs a search engine for blogs, only 7.4 million out of the 133 million blogs the company tracks had been updated in the past 120 days. That translates to 95 percent of blogs being essentially abandoned, left to lie fallow on the Web, where they become public remnants of a dream — or at least an ambition — unfulfilled.”

Why are 95 percent of blogs abandoned?  The answer is the creators of those blogs are not passionate about the content they were putting out there.

Yes, I know that there are other reasons that some blogs may be abandoned such as health, family and financial issues, but I would
be willing to bet that a majority of those blogs are abandoned because the blogger lacks passion for the content.

Here is how you can limit the chances of this happening to you.

Find a subject or topic that you enjoy talking and writing about.  Would you enjoy talking and witting about this subject even if you were not getting paid for it?  If the answer was yes, then this is your passion and this should be the focus of your blog.

The reason you need to pick something that you would do even without getting paid is because most likely you won’t…at first.  When starting a new blog it takes some time to build up a following and a steady flow of traffic.  Your focus should be on providing great content to your readers.  Put your heart into it.  Trust me your readers will know if you are pulling the wool over there eyes.

I am in the Internet Marketing niche and because of that I see it all.  There is nothing worse than someone reviewing a product that you can tell they know nothing about.  Putting your neck on the line for a product that you have never touched is a little risky for someone trying to build up a successful blog and Internet business.  I’m not saying it can’t be done, I’m just saying it’s not a risk you should be taking if you are trying to build up a loyal reader base.

Build relationships with your readers and earn their trust.  You can’t earn someones trust by lying to them.

It’s time to take action!

Sit down and figure out what you are passionate about.  Are there people out there that would be interested in what you have to say?  To determine this put yourself in their shoes.  Write content you yourself would want to read and discuss.  Write content that builds relationships and trust.  Follow your heart and do what you love.  This will prevent you from being part of the 95% that abandon their blogs.

You will not only have the passion to stick with it, you’ll also have the drive to turn it into a successful business.

  • Very true. But sometimes it's hard to know what your passion is, I actually wrote a post about that on bestlifeweb.com
And then when you do know what your passion is, do some proper keyword research first or really define your niche. I have a tendency to jump right in and now have a few sites that are too broad or have no money making potential. Find the right balance!

  • Sylvia, you are correct, sometimes it is hard to find what your passion is. I think the biggest example of this is College. Many students are forced into picking a major before they really know what they want to do in life. Often, they don't find out that they are unhappy with their decision until years down the road.

Finding the right balance, is an excellent tip!
  • Finding a niche is extremely important so that we don't lose out in the clutter. Your article has very realistic action points on how to actually choose that niche!

  • Thanks Maggie! Isn't the 30dac challenge great?
  • Great insights! I can't agree with you more. It's true that the niche should be something that we are familiar with and won't lose interest on!
